He said: “(They think) this guy has done the right thing, he should be grateful that Britain gave him and his family a chance. It doesn’t seem like I would have worked hard for it at all.”

Clive found this abuse disturbing and infuriating. “We all want to be liked, to be appreciated. To be attacked for something like the colour of your skin, resulting in bile, death threats and in extreme cases actual murder (threats), is disturbing because it’s so ridiculous,” he said.

Over time, Clive’s attitude towards the abuse has changed. “As I’ve gotten older and maybe wiser, it’s sad. It’s just pathetic. These people who make racist taunts are very sad, pathetic human beings and they’re probably inadequate in some way themselves.”
