Early Life
Anthony Frank Iommi was born on February 19, 1948 in Birmingham, England.
Tony’s family was Catholic, but they were not overly religious. His parents owned a shop in England and a vineyard in Italy.
Tony began practicing martial arts at the age of 10 due to constant bullying. When he was still young, he fell and cut his lip while being chased by a bully. He adopted the name Scarface and when he became a teenager, he focused on growing a mustache to hide it.
He discovered his passion for music at an early age and initially focused on playing the drums, but decided to switch to guitar so as not to upset his parents.
To earn some money he began working in a sheet metal factory and at the age of 17 had an accident while working which resulted in the amputation of the tips of some fingers on his right hand.
After the accident, he played the guitar with his left hand by making artificial fingers from a melted bottle of Fairy Liquid. This was the beginning of his new style of playing, which featured softer strings and a deeper sound, as the strings were easier to bend.
He also worked several other jobs, including plumbing, retail merchandising, and manufacturing, but these jobs ended after he pursued a music career.
Livelihood
Iommi played in a variety of bands early in his career, most notably the Rockin’ Chevrolets.

He met his old school friend Ozzy Osbourne and took up the challenge of starting his own new band with Bill Ward and Geezer Butler. Little did they know that they would become the richest rockstars in the world in just a few years.
They named their new band Earth, but within a month Tony went to play with Jethro Tull. This only lasted a few weeks and in late 1968 he rejoined his band.
The band changed their name to Black Sabbath and initially struggled to keep up with the constant changes in the music industry. But when they released “Paranoid” and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” they changed rock music forever by creating an entirely new style of heavy metal.
Black Sabbath hit a bit of trouble when Ozzy Osbourne was fired and replaced by Ronnie James Dio.
Soon after, the band began losing members one by one and Ozzy was voted out by the rest of the members, stating that they would all leave the band if he didn’t leave.
Tony eventually decided to strike out on his own and released his first solo album in 1986 called “Seventh Star”.
In 2000, Black Sabbath reunited for a tour and released an album called “13”. 2000 was a great year not only for the band but also for Tony’s solo career, as he released a new album, “Iommi”.
With all the confusion within Black Sabbath, Tony founded a new band called Heaven & Hell. This new band included all the members of Black Sabbath except Ozzy Osbourne.
Heaven & Hell quickly became famous and toured with popular bands like Judas Priest and Megadeth. Unfortunately, the band came to an end when Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer in 2010.
