early life
Anthony Charles Lynton Blair was born on May 6, 1953 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Blair was the second son of Hazel and Leo Blair. His first relocation occurred when he was 19 months old.
In 1954, his parents moved from Paisley Terrace to Adelaide, South Australia. His father later accepted a job as a lecturer at Durham University and thus moved the family to Durham, England. When he was 5 years old, this was the beginning of a long association of Blair with Durham.
Livelihood
After graduating from Oxford in 1975, Tony Blair joined the Labour Party and became active in politics in Hackney South and Shoreditch.
In 1983 Blair was elected as MP for Sedgefield and once he found his footing he rose rapidly.
The following year he was appointed assistant to the Treasury spokesman, his first front-bench position.
Blair then became Shadow Home Secretary in 1992 and Leader of the Opposition in 1994.
Tony Blair, now on his way to becoming one of the world’s richest politicians, had his eyes on the Prime Minister’s chair.
The youngest Prime Minister
In May 1997 Tony Blair became the youngest Prime Minister since 1812, and the first born after the Second World War and the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.
Along with these achievements, Blair was also the Labour Party’s longest-serving Prime Minister, winning the seat twice more in 2001 and 2005.

During his tenure as prime minister, Tony Blair helped negotiate the Good Friday Agreement with Northern Ireland, which ended most of the violence caused by the Troubles.
Blair sent British troops to war five times – in Iraq in 1998 and 2003, in Kosovo in 1999, in Sierra Leone in 2000 and in Afghanistan in 2001.
During the War on Terror in 2001, Blair was a strong supporter of George Bush’s foreign policy and took part in the initial invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
However, his support was strongly criticised, and playwright Harold Pinter and former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad accused him of committing war crimes.
Later, in 2015, Blair apologised for his “mistakes” during the Iraq War, though he refused to apologise for supporting the US-led invasion of the country.
Despite his critics, Blair’s actions in the Middle East also received support from others such as Piers Morgan, especially initially.
abdication
As casualties during the Iraq War mounted, Blair’s popularity in Britain began to decline and a number of MPs began to criticise his handling of the situation.
In 2006, Blair announced during a speech at the Trimdon Labour Club that he would resign as both Labour Party leader and Prime Minister.
At a party conference in June 2007, Blair officially handed over the leadership of the Labour Party to his finance minister, Gordon Brown.
Two days later, Blair resigned as Prime Minister and Brown took office the same day.
After leaving office, Blair became the Middle East envoy to the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia, a post he held until May 2015.
In 2016, Blair founded the Tony Blair Institute, which promotes a global vision by organisations and governments.
Tony Blair criticised the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2021 and also criticised Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party.
However, Blair retains some influence over the party, particularly over current leader Keir Starmer, whom he has advised.
In 2023, he was ranked 16th in the New Statesman’s Left Power List, which shows how important Tony Blair is to UK politics.

Favourite quotes from Tony Blair
“The events of September 11 were and remain a colossal human tragedy. But September 11 presented a major and deliberate challenge not just to the United States but to the entire world. The terrorists’ target was not just New York and Washington, but the values of freedom, tolerance and decency that form the basis of our way of life.” – Tony Blair
“The first rule in politics is that there are no rules, at least not in the case of inevitable defeat or inevitable victory. If you have the right policy and the right strategy, you always have a chance to win. Without them, you can lose, no matter how certain victory may seem.” – Tony Blair
“It often happens in the history of human endeavor that a breakthrough occurs that propels mankind across a threshold into a new era. … Today’s announcement is one such breakthrough, one that opens the way for massive advances in the treatment of cancer and inherited diseases. And this is just the beginning.” – Tony Blair
“I just want to say this. I want to say it gently, but I want to say it strongly: The world has a tendency to say to the United States, ‘The big problems of the world are yours, you go and solve them,’ and then they get worried when the United States wants to solve them.” – Tony Blair
“If we take all these steps and if it turns out to be not true, then we have reduced pollution and adopted better ways of living, the harm is minimal. Conversely, if we take no steps and it turns out to be true, then we have betrayed future generations, and we have no right to do that.” – Tony Blair
