early life
Todd Jerome Gurley II was born on August 3, 1994 in Baltimore, Maryland.
His family moved to Tobaro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, where he grew up and attended high school.
He was educated at Tarboro High School, where he participated in several sports, including basketball, track, football, and soccer.
Livelihood
Like Matthew Stafford and AJ Green, Todd Gurley also began his football career at the University of Georgia as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs.
In 2012, in his first game as a Bulldog, Gurley ran for 100 yards for two touchdowns, immediately showcasing his running skills.
Following his first year, he was named First-Team All-SEC by the Associated Press, one of two freshmen to receive that honor.
He maintained his pace in his sophomore year as well and was named Second-team All-SEC after leading the Bulldogs in all major categories.
Unfortunately, although his junior year started off well, he was suspended in October for violating NCAA rules and missed four games.
He tore his ACL in his first game back, ending his season, which would turn out to be his final one, as he decided to enter the 2015 NFL Draft.
Los Angeles Rams
In the 2015 NFL Draft, Todd Gurley was selected 10th by the Los Angeles Rams, then known as the St. Louis Rams.
He was also the highest drafted running back since Tim Worley in 1989 as the first running back drafted that year.
Gurley made his professional debut in September 2015 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and finished the game with six rushes for nine yards.
He scored his first NFL touchdown in October during a Week 7 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, and continued to run.

At the end of his freshman year, Gurley was selected to the 2016 Pro Bowl along with Aaron Donald and Johnny Hekker.
Gurley was one of only five players selected to the Pro Bowl, the others being Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett, and Marcus Peters.
Catching your pace
The following season, in 2016, Todd Gurley struggled a bit, managing just 278 carries for 885 total yards.
However, he returned after Sean McVay was hired as the Rams’ new head coach in 2017 following the dismissal of Jeff Fisher.
He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month after earning 241 rushing yards and six total touchdowns in September.
Shortly after, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after a 215-yard game against the Dallas Cowboys.
By season’s end, he became the 16th player in history with a 7050/750 rushing/receiving yard season.
After a year of stellar performance, he was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year and finished second to Tom Brady in MVP voting.
Losing in the Super Bowl
In 2018, the Rams extended Gurley’s contract to four years and $60 million, with $45 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Gurley scored the team’s first touchdown of the season by taking a short pass from Jared Goff and running 19 yards to the end zone.
In October he was named the Offensive Player of the Month after rushing for 462 yards and earning seven touchdowns in four games.
However, during the NFC Championship Game, Gurley struggled as he rushed for 10 yards and scored a touchdown before Super Bowl LIII.
After the Rams lost the Super Bowl, it was announced that Gurley had arthritis in his left knee, which was affecting his performance.
When he finished the next season with just 857 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, Gurley was released by the Los Angeles Rams.
Short career
Todd Gurley signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 with a $2 million signing bonus and $500k in incentives.
Though he started the season with similar talent to rival Tyreek Hill, he ended up scoring 678 yards on just 195 carries.
After sitting out the 2021 season, Todd Gurley confirmed his NFL retirement due to difficulties resulting from arthritis.
