Heuerman’s arrest and charges
In July 2023, Heuerman was arrested and charged with the murder of three of the “Gilgo Four” women who were found on Gilgo Beach in 2010. Heuerman was also the prime suspect in the disappearance and murder of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. She was last seen when she was 25 years old. He was charged with her murder in January and pleaded not guilty.
On Thursday, Heuerman was charged with two additional murder counts. He is charged with second-degree murder in the 2003 killings of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla in 1993. Taylor’s remains were found in Manorville in 2003 and later at Gilgo Beach in 2011. Costilla’s remains were found in the North Sea in 1993. Heuerman has pleaded not guilty to these charges as well.
Asa Ellerup filed for divorce
Less than a week after Heuerman’s arrest, Asa Ellerp filed for divorce. Her attorney, Robert Macedonio, confirmed this to CNN, but did not provide further details. Ellerp was shocked by the allegations against her husband. Commissioner Harrison told her she was unaware of her husband’s alleged crimes.

Allerup played an unexpected role in Heuerman’s arrest. His DNA, along with other evidence, helped authorities link Heuerman to the crimes. It was a crucial element in the investigation.
Marriage and family life
Heuerman and Allerup married in April 1996. They lived in Heuerman’s childhood home in Massapequa Park, Long Island. They lived with their daughter and Heuerman’s stepson. Despite living in the neighborhood for a long time, neighbors knew little about them. They described the family as quiet and aloof.
Heuerman was married once before, which lasted three years and produced no children. In his 2018 statement, he mentioned his previous marriage.
DNA evidence and investigation
Hair believed to belong to Ellerp was found on or near the bodies of all three victims. This hair was probably inadvertently placed by Heuerman on his clothing. Improved DNA testing helped establish the connection. Authorities collected DNA samples from discarded items belonging to the Heuerman family.
Ellerp and his daughter were traveling when the murders occurred. Heuerman was alone in the area, which suggests his involvement. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney emphasized this. Defense attorney Joey Jackson also highlighted the importance of this conclusion.

Commissioner Harrison said Ellerp and his daughter were shocked, disappointed and embarrassed by the allegations. This response led him to believe they were unaware of Heuerman’s actions. However, the investigation is ongoing, and more questions need to be answered.
CNN has attempted to contact Ellerp and his daughter multiple times. Ellerp’s lawyers said the family is going through a difficult time. They have requested confidentiality and declined to comment further.
Emotional burden on the family
The sensitive nature of Heuerman’s arrest has had a profound emotional toll on his family. Allerup’s lawyers said the extended family, particularly elderly members, have been affected. They urged the public and press to respect their privacy.
Following his arrest, Heuerman was remanded without bail. He pleaded not guilty through his lawyer.
Investigation continues
Officers are continuing to gather information to determine if the family knew about Heuerman’s double life. The investigation is ongoing, and more details may emerge in the future. Commissioner Harrison and other officers are determined to uncover the truth.
The case has shocked the community and drawn attention to people’s mysterious lives. Allerup’s unexpected involvement in the case has added another layer of complexity to the investigation.
