Early Life

Lennox Claudius Lewis was born on September 2, 1965 in West Ham, London, England.

In search of a better and safer life, when he was twelve years old, he and his mother moved to Ontario, Canada.

Lennox was educated in Kitchener, Ontario, at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute and actively participated in sports at school, playing basketball, soccer and Canadian football.

When he was thirteen, he decided to take up boxing as his favorite sport and after rigorous training, achieved success as an amateur boxer.

At the age of 18 he was asked to represent Canada in the super-heavyweight division at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This happened after he performed well at the Junior World Championship in 1983, winning a gold medal.

The International Boxing Association ranked him as the sixth best heavyweight boxer in the world at the time.

He reached the Olympic quarterfinals but lost to American Tyrell Biggs, who won the gold medal.

Lewis decided to continue boxing as an amateur after the Olympics so that he could compete in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

He lost to Bulgaria’s Petar Stoimenov at the 1986 World Championships, but won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games later that year.

Livelihood

In 1989 Lewis returned to England to begin a professional boxing career.

After signing with boxing promoter Frank Maloney, he was undefeated in his first twenty-two professional fights. He progressed rapidly and in 1992 he agreed to fight Donovan “Razor” Ruddock.

The winner will then face either Riddick Bowe or Evander Holyfield for the title.

Lewis knocked out Ruddock in the second round, and Bowe won his bout against defending champion Holyfield. Bowe decided to vacate the World Boxing Championship title rather than defend his title against Lewis, and Lewis regained it in December 1992.

He was the first British fighter to win the heavyweight title in the 20th century and successfully defended it three times.

Lewis lost the title in September 1994 in a controversial bout that the referee ruled a technical knockout. Lewis got up for a count of six but then stumbled and the referee said he could not continue.

After losing his boxing belt he hired renowned boxing trainer Emmanuel Steward, replacing his previous trainer Pepe Correa.

The return bout between Lewis and Lionel Butler was scheduled to give Lewis a chance to regain his title if he won, but when he did win, the World Boxing Commission decided to give that opportunity to Mike Tyson.

After Tyson won the title he filed a lawsuit requiring him to defend it immediately. After the legal dispute was settled, Tyson successfully defended his title against Bruce Seldon but then vacated it.

Lennox Lewis joins other top British boxers such as Frank Bruno, Tyson Fury and Naseem Hamed as the best world title holders of his era.

Career Income

In one of the most anticipated fights in heavyweight history, Lewis earned over $50 million from just one match with Tyson.

Lennox earned millions of dollars throughout his career through guaranteed purses and, more importantly, PPV bonuses.

Although his earnings are not as high as Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya or the great George Foreman, he is still considered one of the best fighters of all time.
