This super company was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to improve the everyday lives of people and make technology easily accessible to everyone.
Larry Page’s net worth is $122.1 billion as of July 2024.
early life
Larry Page was born on March 26, 1973, in East Lansing, Michigan to parents named Carl and Gloria Page.
Both of his parents were computer science professors, and during his childhood his house was always filled with computer science magazines.
At the age of 12, he realised that he wanted to start his own company.
He was educated at East Lansing High School and graduated in 1991.
He received a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University.
Livelihood
Page entered the PhD program at Stanford with his dissertation in which he investigated the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web, viewing it as a giant graph.
Terry Winograd encouraged his supervisor to pursue the idea and co-authored “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine”.
He developed the PageRank algorithm to measure the importance of web pages and at the same time he met researcher Sergey Brin.
Larry used his dorm room as a laboratory and Brin’s room as an office and programming center, and launched Google on Stanford’s website in 1996.
He considered researching telepresence and self-driving cars before deciding on a more practical option — making money by indexing the Internet.
Launch of Backrub

By 1996, Larry and Sergey had created their first search engine, called ‘Backrub’, which operated entirely on Stanford servers for several months.
After launch, the pair focused on finding out which web pages linked to a given page, believing backlinks to be valuable.
They were impressed by the role of citations in academic publishing and decided to incorporate this into their new search engine.
The two partners decided they wanted to bring their idea to life and approached Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems.
He played a key role in starting the business, and was given a check for $100,000, as by 1997 BackRub had indexed 75.23 million HTML URLs.
In addition to Andy’s $100,000, the couple also raised money from faculty, family, and friends, and eventually raised enough seed money for their venture.
Change your name to Google
When the business finally came into existence in 1998, it was renamed to the memorable name that remains in use today – Google.
The partners founded Google Inc., initially named “Googol”, in 1998, and Larry appointed himself as Google’s first chief executive officer.
Initially, Google’s mission was to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, a task it accomplished beyond what its partners had imagined.
They moved to the Mountain View office in early 2000, and by June 2000 Google had indexed one billion Internet URLs.
Larry’s management style was very authoritarian and dominant, and in 2001 he attempted to remove all project managers to streamline engineering oversight.
However, he saw the need for business experience and hired Eric Schmidt as CEO in 2001, while Page took on the role of president of products.
become a millionaire instantly
In 2004, the website launched the social networking site Orkut and Google Desktop Search and held an IPO later that year, making him a millionaire.
The pair released Google Maps, Google Reader, and Blogger Mobile in 2005, and the company also acquired YouTube and Android.
In 2007, Google signed agreements with Salesforce.com and China Mobile to provide Google’s educational programs to students in Rwanda and Kenya.

The most recent version of Google Earth, Google Sites, was released in 2008, followed by Google Latitude, another version of Google Earth, and Google Ventures.
Google Apps Marketplace was developed in 2010, and in 2011 Eric Schmidt was appointed executive chairman and Larry Page was appointed the new CEO.
Larry now focused on a few ambitious projects like Google X, Calico, and smart-home automation, and launched “Project Kennedy” for a coherent design overhaul.
Google+ was subsequently launched in response to the growth of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook and the acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2011 for $12.5 billion.
Resignation as CEO
Looking to the hardware market, Page unveiled the Chromebook in May 2012 and then founded Alphabet Inc. in 2015, of which he himself became CEO.
Larry resigned as CEO of Alphabet in December 2019 and joined Elon Musk to invest in Tesla Motors and other renewable energy technologies.
He helped startup companies such as OpenER and Kitty Hawk develop consumer aerial vehicles, and helped found the transhumanist think-tank, Singularity University.
Page is currently interested in the socio-economic impacts of advanced intelligent systems and promoting the idea of abundance through technology.
