early life
Kirk Daniel Cousins was born on August 19, 1988 in Illinois.
Cousins is the son of Don Cousins, senior pastor of Discovery Church in Orlando, Florida, and MaryAnn Cousins.
Cousins was educated at Holland Christian High School in Holland, Michigan, where he excelled in football, baseball (as a third baseman and pitcher), and basketball for the Maroons athletic teams.
Livelihood
After becoming a high school football star, Kirk Cousins was redshirted for the 2007 season at Michigan State, where he played for the Spartans.
In 2009, he won the starting quarterback position and led the Spartans to a 6–7 season with 19 touchdowns and 2,680 passing yards.
The following year, he played in the Big Ten Football Championship Game for the first time and led the conference in pass completions, attempts, and passing yards.
Cousins won the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in 2011 and after earning a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, he applied for the NFL Draft.
Like many of the NFL’s richest players, some of the NFL’s most prominent teams were soon vying to sign him.
Washington Redskins
Kirk Cousins was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft as the seventh choice by the Washington Redskins.
Cousins was viewed as an insurance policy in case Redskins’ quarterback Robert Griffin III got injured or was forced out of the game.
In May, he signed a four-year contract with the team and in the second pre-season game, he scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Due to his skills, he was named the backup quarterback to then-starter Rex Grossman.
That same year, he became the third Redskins rookie to be selected Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week, after Griffin and Alfred Morris.
He finished with a 10–6 record and stepped up as the starting quarterback in the 2013 season, as Giffin was declared inactive for that season.

The following season, Cousins and Trent Williams helped the Redskins improve their record, moving from 3–13 to 4–12.
Becoming a Starter
In August 2015, Kirk Cousins was named the starter for the upcoming season in Griffin’s place, and he quickly began assuming his role.
By October, he helped the Redskins earn their biggest win in franchise history, defeating the Buccaneers with a touchdown pass to Jordan Reed with seconds remaining.
At the end of the season, Cousins was named the PFWA’s Most Improved Player, setting the Redskins’ single-season passing yards record with 4,166.
In 2016, the Redskins placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Cousins, which served as a one-year, $20 million contract.
Although he missed the playoffs, he led the team to a winning record of 8–7–1 and finished third in passing yards behind Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.
Due to his performance, he was included in the Pro Bowl for the first time, replacing Matt Ryan who was participating in Super Bowl LI.
Cousins then spent one more season with the Redskins and became the first quarterback in history to be franchise-tagged for two consecutive years.
minnesota vikings
Kirk Cousins signed with the Minnesota Vikings in March 2018 for $84 million, the highest-paid contract in NFL history.
He made his debut in the season opener and finished his first season strongly with 4,298 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
He was named to his second Pro Bowl in the 2019 season before signing a $66 million contract extension with the Vikings.
Cousins kept the momentum going for the 2020 season, and played in his third Pro Bowl the following year even after refusing to take the COVID vaccine.
In March 2022, he signed a one-year extension with $35 million guaranteed, and he helped the Vikings stage the greatest comeback in NFL history.
The Vikings released Adam Thielen in March of 2023, and while things started off well, Cousins suffered an Achilles injury in October.
This effectively ended his season early, and he remains on the injured reserve list, with Josh Dobbs taking over as quarterback.
