Early Life

His parents, Evelina and Guerino Capello, were a school teacher and a housewife. Both his father and uncle were footballers, so it was natural that Fabio became so interested in the sport from an early age.

His uncle, Mario Tortul, played football for Triestina, Padova and the Italy national team in the 1960s.

Nevertheless, young Fabio was discovered by Paolo Mazza (SPAL president), and immediately signed with them for 2 million €.

Livelihood

While playing for SPAL, Fabio showed his talent as a midfielder. But, due to a knee injury, he had to take a break from his football career for some time.

He returned in 1967 and moved to Roma and then, after a string of impressive performances, his career took off with the new club as he helped the team to first place despite a recurrence of his knee injury. Despite his injury, Fabio performed well and was sold to Juventus in 1970.

Unfortunately, his career with Juventus got off to a bad start, as Fabio criticised manager Armando Picchi on the same day Picchi revealed his cancer diagnosis. The club was not impressed and fined him as a result. However, after a poor start, Fabio performed brilliantly and achieved great success with the club.

While with Juventus, Fabio won the league title from 1972 to 1975, as well as helping his team reach the European Cup final in 1973. Despite the success, the club was concerned about Fabio’s injury and traded him to Milan.

He has worked as the manager of Real Madrid, Roma, AC Milan, Juventus, England and Russia. He became the manager of the Russian national team in 2012. He has coached top players such as David Beckham, Mario Balotelli, Kaka as well as many top international players.

After a series of defeats with the team, Fabio was fired and he signed a contract with Jiangsu Suning in 2017. The team started off well but it didn’t last and after a string of defeats, Fabio was fired once again.

This was the final blow for Fabio, and after his dismissal, he decided to retire from coaching altogether. He stays connected to the game by doing TV commentary and you can see what he is up to now by visiting his official Instagram account.
