David Packouz is an American former arms dealer, musician, inventor, and entrepreneur.
In 2005, Packouz joined Efraim Diveroli at Diveroli’s weapons company AEY Inc.
By the end of 2006, the company had won 149 contracts worth approximately $10.5 million.
early life
David Mordecai Packouz was born on February 16, 1982 in St. Louis, Missouri. Packouz was born into a Jewish family.
He is one of nine children, and the son of Shoshana and Rabbi Kalman Packouz of the Orthodox Aish HaTorah, who wrote the book ‘How to Stop Intermarriage’.
Packouz was a licensed massage therapist while working at AEY.
Livelihood
massage therapist
Before beginning his entrepreneurial journey, David Packouz qualified as a massage therapist, and provided healthcare services to clients in St Louis.
However, as the son of a respected and internationally renowned author and religious figure, David knew he could do even better.
So it is no surprise that when a school friend offered him a job at his father’s arms company he immediately accepted the opportunity.
Little did he know that after defrauding the US government, he would soon become one of the richest criminals in the world.
Becoming an international arms dealer
Packouz’s friend, Ephraim Diveroli, a 19-year-old employee at his father’s arms dealership in Miami, offered David a job as an arms dealer.
Ephrem rose rapidly in the corporate world to become President of AEY Inc., a position he achieved just 12 months after joining.
Packouz, 23, and Diveroli, 19, took over the arms trade, and by 2006, they had helped the government win millions of dollars in defense contracts.
The pair were shipping weapons, ammunition, clothing and firefighting equipment worth millions of dollars to various US government agencies.
At the end of 2006, AEY Inc. and the entrepreneurial duo were congratulating themselves as they had received 149 contracts worth approximately $10.5 million.
Chinese ban
Although contracts were being awarded legitimately, obtaining the necessary supplies was proving to be a little difficult, requiring some creativity.
The scene could be a scene from a Ridley Scott war film, but despite knowing that the ammunition was illegal, they concealed the origin of the ammunition.

It is unclear how much involvement Packouz had in the controversial procurement deals, but the Chinese ammunition used in the operation was repackaged to conceal its origins.
After Chinese-made ammunition was found in Eastern Europe, the two were accused of repackaging it and selling it as Hungarian-made ammunition.
The deal involved paying a small village and its inhabitants to repack the goods, but an accident resulted in a massive explosion, killing them.
To make matters worse, Packouz and his boss failed to fulfill various contracts, resulting in a tarnished reputation.
The CIA is also involved
They were also accused of supplying very poor quality weapons and equipment, which commanders said was adversely affecting their mission.
A business associate in Europe, Costa Trebicca, who had recorded phone conversations with Diveroli mentioning involvement with the CIA, was killed.
AEY became the subject of a US investigation due to suspicious deaths and arms embargo violations involving Chinese ammunition.
David Packouz and two other AEY associates were indicted for fraud and conspiracy in June 2006, with the media dubbing them “stoner arms dealers”.
AEY was immediately placed on a US blacklist due to an investigation into Arms Export Control Act violations and contract fraud.
Multi-millionaire fraudsters
But despite the investigation and allegations of shoddy work, AEY secured a multimillion-dollar contract with the Department of Defense to supply ammunition to Afghanistan.
In early 2007, AEY won a $300 million US government contract to supply ammunition and munitions to the Afghan army – clearly, something was wrong.
Packouz and Diveroli were both charged with fraud and in January 2011 pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Diveroli was sentenced to four years in prison for his part in the scheme, while Packouz was placed under house arrest for seven months.
Hollywood Movie
With such an interesting story, it wasn’t long before Hollywood came knocking, when Guy Lawson wrote a book about AEY Inc. titled “War Dogs.”
The film adaptation released in 2016 with a star cast including Bradley Cooper, Jonah Hill, Miles Teller and Ana de Armas.
David played a small role as a guitarist and vocalist in the film, which was based on his arms-trade experiences, but he had left the arms industry behind.
Music inventor
Following Packouz’s legal troubles, after a problem he encountered while recording one of his songs, he began a career in music technology.
He couldn’t find a reputable drummer who could make it to the studio in time to help him, so he came up with a solution.
After several months of research and development, Packouz invented the guitar pedal drum machine and became CEO of Singular Sound.

Innovator and Philanthropist
The pair had an initial goal of raising $75,000 as part of the crowdfunding campaign, but eventually raised nearly $350,000 within just 24 hours.
Leading crowdfunding platform Indiegogo ranked David’s fundraising campaign among the top 50 most funded campaigns, a testament to his leadership and vision.
Continuing his innovation strategy, David has created additional products such as the Cably, MIDI Maestro, and Eros Loop Studio.
In 2016, Singular Sound partnered with “Guitars Over Guns”, helping the non-profit organization provide musical instruments to various disadvantaged youth groups.
Through his musical philanthropy, he has met celebrities such as Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Mark Wahlberg, and Will Smith.
