How did his career influence his decision?
Clive, who is known for his work in global war zones, believes that constant travelling would be unfair to the children. He explained, “We felt that dragging the children around the world would be selfish towards them.” mirrorBoth Clive and Katherine come from large families. Clive is one of seven children, while Katherine has four siblings. They did not feel much need for “family bonding”.

The couple had tried to have children when they were young but nothing happened. Over time, they realised that being parents was not for them. Clive shared many times“We were trying for a baby but nothing was happening. Then we moved house and realised it would be very unfair because we love to travel.”
How do they feel about their decision?
Clive and Katherine have no regrets about their decision to remain childless. They have lived a full and happy life, and they love their nieces and nephews very much. “We come from such large families, our get-togethers are always big. We have lived a full and happy life,” Clive said.
Clive’s parents, Lyn and Norris, are part of the Windrush generation and moved to England from Jamaica in the early 1960s. The racism the family endured, and which Clive continues to face, is a key theme in his memoir.
What challenges did Clive face in his career?
Clive has faced a lot of racism throughout his career. He has received racist letters, emails and messages, and has even had feces sent to him. In 2017, he received a death threat, which investigators considered serious. Clive told the Press Association, “I think things have improved, things are easier now, you are judged on your abilities and qualifications, much more fairly now than when I started in journalism.”

Despite the improvements, Clive still faces intolerance from people who believe there is too much emphasis on racial discourse. He said: “(They think) this guy has done the right thing, he should be grateful that Britain gave him and his family a chance. It doesn’t seem like I would have worked hard for it at all.”
How does Clive deal with racism?
Clive found this abuse disturbing and infuriating. “We all want to be liked, to be appreciated. To be attacked for something like the colour of your skin, resulting in bile, death threats and in extreme cases actual murder (threats), is disturbing because it’s so ridiculous,” he said.
Over time, Clive’s attitude towards the abuse has changed. “As I’ve gotten older and maybe wiser, it’s sad. It’s just pathetic. These people who make racist taunts are very sad, pathetic human beings and they’re probably inadequate in some way themselves.”
Clive Myrie’s journey and the decisions he made with his wife Katherine reflect a life filled with thoughtful choices and resilience in the face of adversity. As he shares his story, his experiences shed light on the challenges and triumphs of pursuing a high-profile career while facing personal and societal challenges.
