Walsh is set to make his State of Origin debut as a fullback for Queensland next week. He will replace Kailene Ponga, who was dropped from the squad due to concerns over his health after suffering a head injury. Walsh’s career has seen both ups and downs. Last year, while playing for the New Zealand Warriors, Walsh admitted to becoming “arrogant” due to partying and drug use. This led to his arrest for cocaine possession in September 2022.
arrest incident
Walsh was arrested for failing to comply with a police direction to move past the nightclub area in Surfers Paradise. During the search, he was found to be in possession of cocaine. Walsh, 19 at the time, was fined $400 and given a good behaviour bond. Walsh deeply regretted the incident, saying he was embarrassed and wanted to be a better role model for his young fans.
Lessons Learned
In addition to the criminal sanction, Walsh received a two-game suspension from the NRL and a $5,000 fine. He said the experience was an important learning experience. He admitted he had become complacent and arrogant, but was grateful to have learned his lesson early in his career. Walsh stressed his mother’s struggle with drug addiction was the reason he decided to stay away from drugs.

Apologies to fans
After his arrest, Walsh addressed Warriors fans in a video. He admitted to possessing drugs and apologized for his actions. Walsh took full responsibility, saying no one else was involved and that he made a mistake. He expressed remorse and committed to learning from the incident.
