Kentucky State Police have announced that remains found in the home of the family of missing 8-month-old Mia Rudd are likely those of a newborn baby girl. The remains were found during a search of the home and have now moved from a search operation to a criminal investigation.

Kentucky State Police detectives recovered the body of an infant about 1:15 a.m. Friday. Remains found in a corner of the wrecked home matched Mia Rudd. The body was in a state of decomposition, indicating the infant had died some time ago.

Trooper Corey King told NBC affiliate WFIE that the discovery, while expected, was not the result they hoped for. Preliminary findings from the medical examiner, including a possible identification of the remains, could be available as soon as Saturday.
Who are the suspects?
Several people connected to Mia Rudd were arrested during the investigation. Her parents, Tesla Tucker, 29, and Cage Rudd, 30, were arrested on drug charges in early June. Her grandparents Billy J. Smith, 49, and Ricky J. Smith, 56, as well as Timothy L. Roach were also taken into custody.

All of the arrested individuals except Roach are from Reynolds Station, which is about 90 miles southwest of Louisville. Roach is from Owensboro, which is 25 miles west of Reynolds Station. It is currently unclear whether they have legal representation, as the area’s public attorney has not responded to requests for comment.
What was the reason for this discovery?
The search for Miya intensified when law enforcement officers found drugs, including fentanyl-laced pills, openly at the Motel 6 where her parents were staying. The parents were also charged with child abandonment, which further fueled suspicion.
Grandmother Billie J. Smith was involved in the investigation due to an active warrant related to a domestic incident. Roach, who was present at her residence, reportedly attempted to dispose of the drugs when police arrived.
What about other family members?
On Wednesday, Mia’s maternal grandparents, Taletha and David Tucker, were also arrested on warrants. They were raising Mia’s three siblings. The nature of these warrants is still unclear, but they were initially held at the Daviess County Detention Center in Owensboro.
Similarly, Brody C. Penn, 28, who was living with Mia’s parents, was charged with drug trafficking. Penn has been in custody since May on other drug charges. It is not known if he has legal representation.

On Tuesday, state police used cadaver dogs to search for bodies in the woods near Mia’s home. Mia was initially identified as Maya Tucker, but authorities later confirmed her last name is Rudd.
Trooper King said state child welfare officials had previously removed three of Mia’s siblings from the home over drug charges. They had planned to do the same with Mia before she went missing. Methamphetamine was found in Mia’s umbilical cord at birth, raising concerns about her safety.
What did investigators discover?
A family member last saw Mia in late April. When asked about her whereabouts, her parents falsely claimed the state had already removed her. Investigators quickly determined this was a lie, leading to a more intensive search.
what happens next?
With the discovery of the remains, the focus of the investigation has shifted to a criminal case. Authorities are now working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Mia’s death. This includes identifying all individuals who may have been involved in her disappearance and death.
What are its broader implications?
This tragic case highlights the ongoing issues of drug abuse and child welfare. It underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and intervention by state authorities to protect vulnerable children. The involvement of multiple family members and the extent of the drug activity also reflect broader societal challenges that require comprehensive solutions.
